Types of Kidney stones
Kidney stones form when minerals in the urine crystallize and grow into solid deposits. Approximately 85% of kidney stones are composed of calcium, with the most common types being calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones. The remaining stones are made up of other substances, such as uric acid, cystine, or struvite. Struvite stones, also known as infection stones, are composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate and typically develop in response to urinary tract infections.

- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)
- Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
- Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS)
- Pyelolithotomy
ESWL is a non-surgical treatment that uses a special machine to create shock waves. These waves are aimed at the kidney stone using X-rays. They go through the skin and break the stone into smaller pieces. Over the next few weeks, you will pass these tiny pieces out of your body through urine.
PCNL is a small surgery for larger kidney stones that are hard to reach. The doctor makes a small cut in your back to get to the kidney. A tool called a nephroscope is used to find and break the stone into smaller pieces, which are then removed. This procedure is done under general anesthesia, and you will usually stay in the hospital for one or two days to recover.
RIRS is a minimally invasive method that uses a flexible camera called an endoscope. The endoscope is inserted through the urethra (the tube that carries urine), bladder, and ureter to reach the kidney. Once the stone is found, it can be broken up with a laser or ultrasound, or it can be taken out with small tools. RIRS works well for stones in the kidney or upper ureter.
Pyelolithotomy Removal of a kidney stone by the surgical incision of the renal pelvis.
These treatments are chosen based on how big and where the stones are, as well as the patient's health, to effectively manage kidney stones.
